This policy explains what happens to information when you visit reactguide.org.

1. Who runs this site

reactguide.org is a personal, non-commercial hobby project run by an individual. It is not a company, it sells nothing, and it has no employees.

For anything to do with this policy, write to contact@reactguide.org.

2. The short version

  • There are no accounts, no sign-ups, and no forms to fill in.
  • There is no analytics software, no advertising, and no tracking of any kind.
  • No third-party scripts, fonts, embeds, or content delivery networks are loaded. Everything the page needs is served from reactguide.org.
  • No tracking cookies are set. The only thing stored on your device is a note of your light or dark theme choice, and only if you change it.
  • The web server keeps standard access logs, which include IP addresses. This is the only information collected about visitors.

3. Server access logs

Like almost every web server, the server hosting this site records a line in a log file each time a file is requested. Those lines contain:

  • your IP address
  • the date and time of the request
  • the page or file requested, and the HTTP method
  • the response status code and the number of bytes sent
  • the referring page, if your browser sent one
  • your browser's user agent string, which usually names the browser and operating system

Why these logs are kept

They are used to keep the site running and secure: diagnosing errors, spotting broken links, identifying abusive traffic such as scraping or attempted attacks, and understanding rough load. They are not used to build a profile of you, are not linked to any other information, and are not used for advertising or analytics.

Legal basis

An IP address can count as personal data under data protection law. Where such law applies, the basis relied on for keeping these logs is legitimate interests — the interest in running a website securely and reliably. That interest is a narrow one: the logs are minimal, are not combined with anything else, and are not shared.

How long they are kept

Access logs are rotated and deleted after 30 days, unless a specific line is being kept longer as part of investigating an ongoing security or abuse problem.

Who can see them

Only the person who runs this site, and the hosting provider in its capacity as the operator of the underlying infrastructure. Logs are not sold, shared, or transferred to anyone else, except where disclosure is required by law.

4. Cookies and browser storage

This site sets no cookies at all — not for analytics, not for advertising, not for sessions.

One item is stored in your browser's local storage: a key named rg-theme holding either light or dark. It is written only when you press the theme button, it never leaves your browser, and it is not sent to the server. Clearing your browser's site data removes it, and the site works normally without it.

5. What is not here

To be explicit, this site does not use any of the following: web analytics, tag managers, advertising or retargeting pixels, social media widgets or share buttons, embedded videos, hosted fonts, comment systems, chat widgets, A/B testing tools, or session recording.

No files are loaded from another domain, so no other company learns that you visited this site by way of a request from this page.

The guide links to external sites, such as react.dev and package documentation. Following a link takes you to a site with its own privacy practices, which this policy does not cover. Nothing about you is passed along beyond what your browser sends automatically.

7. Children

The guide is technical documentation with no content aimed at children and no way to submit information. No information is knowingly collected from anyone, of any age, beyond the server logs described above.

8. Your rights

Depending on where you live, data protection law may give you rights over personal data relating to you: to be told what is held, to get a copy of it, to have it corrected or erased, to restrict how it is used, to object to its use, and to receive it in a portable form. Requests are honoured whoever you are and wherever you are, without anyone having to work out first which law applies.

In practice the only data held is a set of log lines associated with an IP address, kept for a short period. To exercise any of these rights, email contact@reactguide.org and include the IP address and the approximate dates concerned, since there is no other way to find the relevant entries. Requests are answered within one month and there is no charge.

9. Complaints

If you are unhappy with how a request has been handled, say so and it will be looked at again. Depending on where you live, you may also be able to take the matter to the data protection authority responsible for your country. You are welcome to raise it here first, but you do not have to.

10. Changes to this policy

If this policy changes, the revised version is published on this page and the date at the top is updated. There is no mailing list, so the date is the way to tell.
